Minutes of the Meeting of the Executive Council
April 28, 2004

Present: S. Barber, V. Brown, L. Gregg-Jolly, M. Montgomery, W. Moyer, R. Osgood, M. Schneider, J. Swartz, R. Vetter

The meeting came to order at 4:20 p.m. in the Nollen House Conference Room.

The minutes and excerpts of 4/21/04 were amended and approved.

President's Remarks

The President expressed his deep regret at the death of Pamela Ferguson. He offered his sincere appreciation for all the help she gave him during his first years as President of the College. He stated that "she was a great colleague and this is a loss to me". A moment of silence was observed by Council.

Dean's Remarks

The Dean also noted that Pam was a wonderful mentor to him as he began his term as Dean of the College.

He noted the Board of Trustees will be considering the changes to the Faculty Handbook that had been approved by the faculty, as well as cases of promotion and tenure during their meeting this week.

He updated Council on the status of faculty searches.

The President distributed the Report on the Harvard College Curricular Review. He particularly noted the proposed shift in pedagogical emphasis in introductory science toward more active, discovery-based learning. L. Gregg-Jolly commented that Harvard was just trying to catch up with Grinnell.

Council Member Remarks

M. Montgomery noted that he is in the final process of drafting the report of the Strategic Planning Committee.

M. Schneider noted that he has heard complaints from several people in the Science Division regarding the problems arising (principally with students who work in different units of the College) from the shift from paper student timesheets to eTime. The President said he would
look into it.

Faculty Position Requests

There was discussion of ten departmental proposals for faculty positions.

J. Swartz and W. Moyer left the meeting at 5:45 p.m.

The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
