President's Remarks

The President noted that there are a number of events and talks on modern Japan taking place this week sponsored by the Rosenfield Program and a grant by the Freeman Foundation. He noted that Phyllis Harris '39 will be presenting a very valuable piece of Yayoi pottery from Japan at the convocation tomorrow. He complimented Wayne Moyer for once again organizing an excellent program.

Dean's Remarks

At the request of the Dean, Marci Sortor reviewed the staffing situation.

Council Member Remarks

M. Schneider distributed the document from the Faculty Organization Committee which contains the proposed changes to the language of the Faculty Handbook concerning the performance reviews for faculty of the Library and Physical Education Department.

M. Schneider requested Executive Council review of the current budget and shortfall projections for next year at a future meeting.

Faculty Salary Process

There was extended discussion of the process of implementation of the three year review cycle and the role of the interim, complete and tenure reviews in setting merit scores, whether the proposed process of setting raises for assistant professors for the first three years would have deleterious effects on achieving the goal of peer institutional parity of compensation for this group of faculty, and whether there would be gender inequality experienced as a result of the process (a result of self-selection for coming up for early review).

The President left the meeting at 5:10 p.m.

M. Montgomery stated that this process document will be given to the faculty for discussion in two weeks.

Revision of the Appendices to the Faculty Handbook

M. Sortor distributed a proposal for amending the appendices of the Faculty Handbook. It was decided that the Council would need some time to consider the proposal and that it would be discussed at a later meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 5:22 p.m.
