President's Remarks

Dean's Remarks
The Dean reported that there are 217 CSMP applications nearly ready to send out. He asked if the previous letter to department chairs and process were appropriate and what date Council recommended as a deadline for the proposals. It was agreed to a letter similar to that of last year and that proposals would be due on January 30 for discussion by Council at its February 4 meeting.
Council Remarks
There were no remarks by Council members.
Sociology Department Proposal
The Executive Council considered a proposal to make a tenure-track appointment following interviews conducted at the end of the fall semester. After discussion, the department's proposal was approved.
During the discussion of this search, the Executive Council has considered the tension between wanting to keep position descriptions as open as possible while allowing departments to use reasonable curricular needs to rank candidates. It was concluded that the best strategy would be to have an ad as open as possible, but to indicate that preference would be given to candidates who could contribute to some particular curricular areas. Jim Swartz agreed to draft three sample ads, one of which was too broad, one too narrow, and one of the type the Executive Council would prefer.
The meeting adjourned at 3:18 p.m.
