February 7, 2001
Excerpts

Present: R. Osgood, J. Brand, J. Swartz, P. Smith, D. Caulkins, W. Ferguson, B. Grey, K. Kamp, T. Moore, M. Pillado-Miller, B. Voyles.

The meeting came to order at 4:20 p.m. in the Nollen House Conference Room. The minutes and excerpts from the 1/31/01 meeting were approved.

President's Remarks

The President noted that there is a meeting scheduled for Council with the selected Trustees on February 17 and he asked that the document which Council is preparing for that meeting be provided to him so he could forward it to the Trustees in time for the meeting.

Dean's Remarks

The Dean noted that a position description was approved in Physical Education, and that approvals for offers to be made in Spanish, English (2), and Religious Studies had been granted by Council electronically since the last meeting. He thanked Council for their cooperation in these time-sensitive situations.

The Dean suggested that we release the Chemistry Department from its proposal to bring a candidate in to interview for a Consortium for a Strong Minority presence fellowship and approve the Department's request for an interview but as a National Science Foundation sponsored Postdoctoral Fellow instead. This action was suggested because the funds that would be required to support this position are available in the Foundation's Award for the Integration of Research and Education grant to the College.

Diversity Proposals

Council discussed proposals from the Philosophy, Music, Sociology, and Russian Departments and authorized campus interviews for candidates in music, sociology, and Russian.

The President and J. Brand left the meeting at 5:25 p.m.

B. Grey noted that there will be a proposal forthcoming from the Center for International Studies for a human geographer who would have the Political Science Department as his/her departmental home.

M. Pillado-Miller asked whether the Division Chairs could query their departments to find out what the personnel actions "landscape" will most likely look like in April.

The meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m.

Secretary
Karen Wiese
