Present: R. Osgood, J. Brand, J. Swartz, P. Smith, W. Ferguson, B. Grey, K. Kamp, T. Moore, M. Pillado-Miller, B. Voyles.
The meeting came to order at 4:20 p.m. in the Nollen House Conference Room.
B. Grey extended an invitation to attend the meetings of the Executive Council to J. Brand, H. Scott, P. Smith, and K. Wiese.
The minutes and excerpts from the 9/6/00 meeting were corrected and approved.
President's Remarks
The President noted that he has moved to constitute the committees which will guide the planning process for the athletic fields, campus center, library, science center-phase II, and the energy center. This does not, however, reflect a commitment on the part of the Trustees to build these new facilities. Several faculty members have been appointed to each committee.
Dean's Remarks
The Dean stated that the Library has just concluded interviews for a position that was not filled last year and should be coming to Council with a recommendation soon.
Continued Discussion of Diversity Document
B. Ferguson led the discussion of the draft which was modified by the subcommittee over the past week. B. Grey moved, B. Ferguson seconded, approval of this document.
T. Moore asked about including language about the future assessment of this strategy. It was decided to write a section four that would address assessment.
The document was approved as amended.
The President and J. Brand left the meeting at 5:55 p.m.
Council Remarks
B. Grey noted that he has been reminded that, as Chair of the Faculty, he has an obligation to make a presentation to the Board in October. He asked for guidance from Council. It was decided that he would speak to them about the progress made on the diversity issue since their summer retreat.
B. Ferguson noted that the Grinnell-in-Washington program is being initiated during Fall 2001. The announcement for faculty applications was sent out today. He is encouraging Council members to go back to their divisions and talk to faculty about this opportunity.
M. Pillado-Miller noted that she has reviewed the position descriptions that were recently placed together along with the display ad. There is discrepancy among them in the use of language regarding the interest of candidates to contribute to general education. It was agreed that the standard language will be changed to reflect this commitment in future advertisements.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
