October 13, 1999

Present: Dean Swartz, Associate Deans H. Scott and P. Smith, E. Dobbs, B. Ferguson, T. Moore, M. Pillado-Miller, D. Smith, B. Voyles.

The meeting was called to order by the Dean at 4:20 p.m. in Nollen House.

The minutes and excerpts of the meeting of October 6 were corrected and approved.

Remarks by the Dean

The Dean reviewed the meeting that he attended with the campus master plan consultants in Boston on October 4th. The discussions at the meeting affirmed the need to continue with the kinds of things that are happening on campus, such as international studies planning. There will be an oversight committee appointed to ensure that the whole long-term picture will be the maintained in order to avoid project-by-project fragmentation.

The Deans were at Beloit College on October 5th for the ACM Deans' Meeting. The issue of ACM collaboration was raised.

The President will be in England during Fall break, in part to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Grinnell in London. We are sending a team of administrative staff to examine how we might strengthen the advising and support systems for the program.

He alerted the Council that leave replacement proposals will be coming in soon.

End of Course Evaluations

The Council received the Spring ‘99 evaluation form with proposed wording revisions from Carol Trosset, as requested. The Council discussed the wording of each of six questions.

Discussion of principles behind faculty staffing decisions

The discussion was postponed.

Discussion of postdoctoral proposals submitted by departments

The discussion was postponed.

Writing Lab

The Dean introduced the subject of Betty Moffett retiring from her position as Director of the Writing Lab at the end of the year. He stated that this is in the purview of the Council to discuss how we should proceed to fill the position.

B. Ferguson asked if we had ever done a national search for any position in the Writing Lab. The answer was–no.

B. Voyles asked if the Writing Lab has ever had an external review. The answer was–no.
