Remarks of the President

The President noted that Grinnell College was featured in an article in the June 2000 issue of Money Magazine. The focus of the article was Joseph Rosenfield.

Remarks of the Dean

The Dean updated the Council on the status of faculty searches. This year to date the College has made 29 appointments with 26 of those being the first choice candidates. In summarizing the tenure track situation he noted that nine are departing and nine new appointments have been made. The net effect of the changes shows a significant shift from men to women and no change in faculty of color.

He stated that the Dean's Office had received a proposal from the American Studies Department to restructure the department as an interdisciplinary concentration and dissolve the major. He also noted a proposal from the department to the Curriculum Committee that suggests a structure for the new concentration. The Curriculum Committee met and had no objections, but thought that the Divisions should discuss the concentration before they approved it.

M. Pillado-Miller raised the issue of the need to discuss the approval and structure of concentrations. E. Dobbs responded that the Curriculum Committee will be doing that next year.

Discussion of the President's Diversity Document

The President suggested that rather than make a proposal in a particular area he is recommending that an informal study group composed of himself, Jonathan Brand, Katya Azoulay, and Bob Grey meet during the summer to discuss what specifically can be done to increase the diversity of the faculty and to develop a proposal. D. Smith requested that this process be made known to the full faculty so that individuals can provide input.

Continuation of Discussion of Requests forFaculty Position

The Council followed the principles to be used in staffing decisions which were agreed upon at its October 27, 1999 meeting. Those principles, not set in any rank order, include:

The Council has recommended to the President that the following faculty position actions be approved:

Two positions in the English Department (replacement)
One position in the Religious Studies Department (replacement)
One position in the Chemistry Department (replacement)
One position in the Computer Science Department (additional)
One position in the Anthropology Department (replacement)
One position in the Political Science Department (replacement)
