The meeting came to order at 4:15 p.m. in the Nollen House Conference Room.
Tom Crady was present to report on the status of admissions for academic year 2000-2001. The statistics include: 2,836 (2,446) total applications; 2,268 completed part two; 1194 were admitted; SAT-Verbal 680 (667); SAT Math 666 (658); ACT 30 (29); 311 deposits to date (goal is 372). Numbers in all categories are up.
Minutes and excerpts of the meeting of April 19, 2000 were corrected and approved.
The President had no remarks.
Remarks of the Dean
The Dean noted that we are in the midst of interviewing candidates. He anticipates proposals from Political Science, Sociology, English, and Anthropology. The Writing Lab has been conducting a search for two positions and will be making a recommendation soon.
H. Scott and the Dean have been meeting with the International Studies Steering Committee to try to identify a suitable administrative structure.
He noted that there has been a joint meeting of the Personnel Committee and Executive Council over the past couple of years. These have been productive and he suggested that such a meeting should take place this year. The President asked if the Personnel Appeals Memo should be reviewed.
E. Dobbs asked about the status of the American Studies Department proposal to become a concentration.
Continuation of Discussion of Requests for Faculty Positions
Council continued its discussions of the requests from departments for faculty positions.
R. Osgood and J. Brand left the meeting at 6:00 p.m.
Council Remarks
B. Voyles asked if the continuing members of Council and the new Chair of the Faculty could meet before school is over to set the important long-range issues of the next year's agenda. There was agreement that this would happen.
