Summary
Admission and Financial Aid Committee Meeting
October 4, 2004

The meeting was called to order at 1 PM.

Sumner gave a Posse Foundation-GC report and announced the dates for selecting the 2 new Posses that will enter the College in the fall of 2005. Professors were invited to join in the 2 selection trips; Dec. 7 in LA and Dec. 13 in the District of Columbia. Jean and David said they thought they could join in the Dec. 13 selection process, and Tom volunteered to be a back-up person for either or both selection trips.

Eric Staab, the Associate Dean of Admission & Coordinator of International Admission, led a discussion of the ins and outs of our international enrollment efforts. This is a continuation of a discussion that spanned most of the 2002-03 academic year for the Committee, a discussion the Committee suspended as it waited for the final strategic planning report that might guide this issue. That report is yet to be finalized and Sumner recommend the Committee proceed with its discussion and recommendation of changes (if any) in the way international students are admitted and aided. Eric provided considerable information, much of which the veteran Committee members has seen before (also thanks to Eric), and an extended discussion followed. At the suggestion of Jim Swartz, Eric agree to bring back to the Committee at its Nov. 1 meeting two or more scenarios as to how changes in our current policies might play out. Sumner stated that he now favors a need-sensitive admission policy that will enable the College to provide better aid packages to needy international admits. His hope is that the Committee will make any recommendations it has in this regard following its next discussion providing it has sufficient information.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 PM.
