Summary
Admission and Financial Aid Committee Meeting
November 3, 2003
The meeting
was called to order at 1:05 PM
Sumner provided copies of both the latest U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT and NEWSWEEK college rating issues (Sept. 2003) and some explanation of their impact on applications for admission.
Eric Staab, Associate Dean of Admission and Coordinator of International Admission, presented 2 proposals the College has recently received regarding the enrollment of international students. One involves 1 year exchange students from Japan's Waseda University, and 1 involves junior transfer students from the Middle-East. After considerable discussion the Committee decided to encourage Dean Staab to cautiously explore both possibilities keeping in mind that (A) we do not want many students from either program, (B) that we are net-tuition sensitive regarding our enrollment of international students, and (C) that junior transfers can be problematic at the College and require dept. review prior to the rendering of an admission decision. Dean Staab will report back to the Committee once he learns more about these possibilities.
The Committee considered a request of a deferred new student who was admitted for the fall of 2003, was forced at the last minute to not enroll for medical reasons, was granted a 1 year deferral, and now wishes to enroll in Jan. of 2004 as a first year student. After considerable discussion it was agreed to stick with the College policy of not enrolling new first year students in Jan., but to allow this student to take 2 or so college classes between now and his enrollment in the fall of 2004, and still come to the College as a first year student.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:15 PM.
