Summary
Admission and Financial Aid Committee Meeting
October 6, 2003
The Committee
meeting came to order shortly after noon on Mon., Oct. 6.
Professor Howard Burkle presented information to the Committee from his perspective as Mentor to the College's 12 new Posse Foundation students. Professor Burkle described his training, involvement and role as Posse Mentor beginning with his appointment last semester. He observed that some of the 12 students are experiencing academic and other adjustments to GC, including the high writing expectations of the faculty He also indicated that their adjustment after 1 month did not seem radically different from that of other new students he has observed and advised over the decades. The Committee may want to invite Professor Burkle back for another meeting next semester.
Jim Sumner shared information the Committee had requested at the pervious meeting concerning the academic performance at the College of permanent resident visa holders. Of the 17 such students currently at GC, 6 are new. Of the 11 returning students 4 are earning GPAs below 3.00, 1 is in official academic difficulty, and the mean GPA for the group is 3.030. Sumner also shared information as per the Committee's request about current GC students whose secondary school GPA slipped in their last semester and who, therefore, received a letter of warning. Of the 37 semesters such current students have been enrolled at the College, 11 semesters have seen these students earn below a 3.00 GPA. As a group they earned a first semester mean GPA of 2.917, an overall mean GPA of 3.032, and 1 failed out of the College.
The meeting was adjourned shortly after 1:00 PM.
