Minutes
Admission and Financial Aid Committee Meeting
September
16, 2002
1) Professor Swartz opened the meeting shortly after noon in the Conference Room at Windsor House.
2) Members introduced themselves; all were present except Geo. Yeboah, who later called in his regrets.
3) The Committee's schedule was discussed; monthly meetings are scheduled for the year but other meetings can be added at the request of Committee members as needed.
4) The issue raised with Professor Cunningham and Jim Sumner by Professor B. Voyles concerning the lack of academic preparation of some new fall 2002 transfer students was discussed. Professor Voyles is concerned about both the lack of previous academic performance (grades and SAT scores) and the ability to graduate in the proper amount of time depending upon the major chosen. It was agreed to:
A) Ask all department chairs if they would like to review completed application for admission files of transfer students intending to major in their discipline before an admission decision is made;
B) Professor Voyles will review all transfer application for intended biology and biological chemistry majors before admission decisions are made; and
C) Professor Swartz will ask the College Registrar to make college transcripts available to advisors of those students.
It is hoped that this will improve the College's admission making ability.
5) Jim Sumner presented a brief summary of the 2002 Iowa Academic All-Stars who contacted and/or applied for admission to GC because some Committee members were interested in this topic late last semester;
A) 15 All-Stars contacted or applied to GC, 5 were admitted and 1 is enrolled; and
B) 50 All-Star Nominees contacted or applied to GC, 10 were admitted and 2 enrolled.
6) Other agenda items identified for future meetings are:
A) Continuation of the College's need blind admission policy for international students in light of the College's inability to meet the full financial need of all admitted international students (Eric Staab, Associate Dean of Admission, will lead discussion);
B) Admission of College employees to degree candidacy; and
C) Discussion of market research results (due to arrive soon) in the context of the College's newly adopted Mission Statement and desire to deliver the most accurate messages to prospective students and their families.
The meeting was adjourned shortly after 1:00 P.M.
