Minutes
Admission and Financial Aid Committee Meeting
April 7, 2003

1) The meeting was called to order at 12:10 PM in the John Chrystal Center

2) Discussion of the topic of how to best report application numbers to outside agencies and publications resumed from the previous meeting. Sumner reported, as per the Committee's request, that if GC counted incomplete apps. that are approaching completion and would be acted upon if they were superior, it would increase our app. pool by approximately 128 apps. He also pointed out that the College received 311 Part I only apps. last year and 127 apps. that were withdrawn by the applicant before being completed.

The Committee recommends to the President that GC not adopt a policy like that of Carleton and Maclester Colleges (counting all apps. as actionable by denying admission to all incomplete applicants), and that he, along with the Dean of Admission and the VP for Student Services, explore the middle counting ground between the Carleton-Mac approach and the current GC approach. The Committee feels it might be unethical to use the reporting/counting methods of Carleton and Mac.

3) The Committee then took up again the possibility of changing the admission and/or financial aid policies for international applicants for admission. After considerable discussion it was agreed to postpone any possible changes until the Committee on Strategic Planning completes its work and presents an interim report to the campus community late this semester since that report is likely to address enrollment issues (including those for international students). The 3 overlapping members of the 2 committees (Tom Crady, Mark Montgomery and Jim Swartz) volunteered to carry any messages forward to the strategic planning group from the Committee, and encouraged members to contact them.

The meeting adjourned at 1:00 PM.

-Jim Sumner
