Minutes
Admission and Financial Aid Committee Meeting
March 3, 2003

The meeting was called to order at 12:05 PM in the Lower Level Conference Room of the John Chrystal Center.

1. Sumner gave a report on the current admission cycle, stating that
(A) Total applications are up 1%
(B) Completed applications are up at least 11%
(C) Recent history predicts that we will enroll about 3 times as many new African-Americans, twice an many Hispanics/Latinas/Latinos, more Native Americans and about the same number of Asian-Americans students this fall semester as compared to last fall

2. The President has asked Sumner and Vice President Crady to seek advice on his behalf from the Committee regarding 2 data reporting issues; (A) should the College report all SAT and ACT scores of enrolling students as opposed to just the higher score, the 1 that prompts admission, and (B) should the College deny admission to all incomplete admission files in order to drive up the number of actionable applicants and down the percentage of admitted students (as do Carleton and Macalester Colleges)?.

The Committee advises the President to direct that the College report only the higher of the ACT or SAT scores for enrolled students who submit both. The logic of the Committee seemed to be that since the higher scores, regardless of how many times the tests are taken, are the ones currently reported, this recommendation is consistent with current policy.

Regarding item (B) the Committee liked to the notion of seeking a middle ground between the Carleton-Macalester policy and the Grinnell policy of reporting only apps. that are complete. For example, one professor suggested GC report as actionable all apps. that approach completion and would result in admission of superior students but not result in the denial of poor students. Sumner agreed to collect a bit of added data so that this item could be concluded on April 7 and a recommendation passed along to the President.

The meeting adjourned at 1:05 PM.

-Jim Sumner
