Minutes
Admission and Financial Aid Committee Meeting
March 3, 2003
The Committee meeting was called to order shortly after noon on Mon., March 3 in the John Chrystal Center.
Jim Sumner provided a brief report on the current admission cycle, saying that applications are again up slightly this year, and providing details of the applicant pool of students of color. Applications are up significantly for African-Americans, up modestly for both Latina/Latino/Hispanics and Native Americans, and down slightly for Asian-Americans. Application processing, Faculty Board on Admission decisions, and yield planning are progressing on schedule. Additionally, the Office of Admission continues to host large numbers of visiting prospective students and their families.
Eric Stab
resumed leadership of our discussion of possible changes in the admission
and financing procedures for international applicants for the fall of 2004.
He distributed 2 charts and a discussion sheet outlining 3 options for future
policy. Both the charts and the option sheet are available to anyone who
wishes to have one (contact Jim Sumner or Eric Staab). Eric also led a discussion
of the pros and cons of each option. Briefly, the options are:
1) Continue the status quo; need blind admission and do not full need
2) Become need sensitive in admission and meet the need of more admitted
students
3) Become need sensitive in admission and meet full need of all admitted
students
One Committee member suggested there is another option (1.5) which is to become need sensitive in admission and continue to award aid as we presently do.
As the hour ended it was suggested that the Committee meet on both March 31 and April 7 in order to progress with the discussion of the possible policy changes.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:15.
