1) Sumner updated the Com. on the current status of the present admission cycle, pointing out that there have no major changes, but a great deal of recruitment activity, since our April 15 meeting. He explained that with the College's transfer student applicant deadline being May 1 and with the National Candidates Reply Date being May 1 as well, that we will know more at our May 13 meeting regarding our fall, 2002, new student enrollment. He also stated that the College welcomed an unusually large number of visitors in April (e.g., more than last year), mostly admitted students and their families.
2) Scott Baumler and Carol Trosset (from the College's IR office), along with Professor Cunningham, led a discussion of the newly collected and examined data on applicants to the College and their characteristics that seem to best indicate their chances of academic success at the College. Scott shared new, additional data asked for by the Committee. Consensus seemed to be that the current faculty developed admission rating scale is the best single indicator of success at the College ( as measured by academic performance and likelihood of graduation), but the need for additional discussion was apparent as well. It was agreed to continue our discussion at our next meeting and once again Professor Cunningham agreed to give us a short analysis via email prior to the meeting.
3) Eric Staab, Associate Dean of Admission, led a discussion of the pros an cons of the College changing its current policy of need blind admission for international students in light of our inability to meet their full demonstrated financial need (in contrast to our policies for US citizens and permanent residents). The Committee agreed to continue the discussion at our next meeting as well.
4) Sumner again raised the possibility of approval of the proposed ASP, another draft of which had been distributed at the Committee's April 15 meeting. Everyone agreed that the new draft appeared to be acceptable except Professor Cunningham who felt that 1 sentence need additional clarification. He then kindly agreed to draft a new version of that sentence, item number 2 on the top half of page 1.
The Com. adjourned at approximately 1:15
PM.
