Admission and Financial Aid Committee
Summary of April 1, 2002, Meeting

Sumner provided an update of the current admission cycle pointing out that we have 3% more applicants this year, 4% more completed applications and 7% more admitted students as we aim for a larger entering class this coming fall semester. He also gave each Committee member a complete list of the College's April yield program activities which is more active and more aggressive that in recent years (including several new components such as a Town of Grinnell welcome, letter from Kendra Young, the College's latest Rhodes Scholar, etc.).

Professor Patch updated the Committee on the wrap up of the Board on Admission's case reviews, mentioned that the Board will meet 1 last time for this year next month. The Board read 34% more application for admission files this year than last and the same number as the 5 year Board average.

Sumner described the current status of the research initiated by Professor Cunningham and the Committee. Scott Baumler and possibly Carol Trosset will join the Committee for its next meeting and share information they have collected and formatted.

Sumner presented draft documents for the proposed Grinnell College Advanced Scholars Program (ASP), a possible formalization of the College's practice of allowing local high school students to take classes at the College for no fee and with no admission process. The Committee make several suggestions to the Sumner drafts and he agreed to make all of the suggested revisions and return new drafts to the Committee for its consideration.

Finally, Sumner asked the Committee's approval to create an Early Decision (ED) II program in an effort to enroll a few more ED students annually. He said this is a common practice among our peer institutions and other very selective colleges. The Committee approved the addition of ED II to the College's admission plans.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:15 PM.
