ADMISSION AND FINANCIAL AID COMMITTEE
SUMMARY of MEETING
February 18, 2002

Sumner provided an update on the current admission cycle stating that total applications are up 2% and that completed apps. are up considerable more. Additionally, apps. for students of color are up, although they are down slightly for African-American students. He expressed cautious optimism.

Jim Swartz and Sumner provided an overall enrollment update in Tom Crady's absence. The total enrollment picture is good as enrollment targets are being met. Enrollment was discussed in light of both the construction of new residences (3, 4, or 5 to be decided by the Board of Trustees this month) and off campus study. Jim Swartz stated that apps. for off campus study have increased.

The INS regulations update and the Board on Admission update were rolled over to the next meeting.

Charles Cunningham made a research proposal based on his conversations with other professors and staff, as well as his observations as a member of the Committee. He will circulate a draft of his proposal to the other Committee members and they will comment before our next meeting at which the proposal will be discussed further. Professor Cunningham and some of his colleagues are anxious to learn more about our ability to predict success at GC for our applicants and avoid causing undue stress on those students who are unable to be successful here.
