The meeting was called to order shortly after noon.
ADMISSION UPDATE: Sumner provided an admission update, pointing out that total applications, completed applications, international applicants and applicants of color are all up. Within this later group of applicants, applications are up nicely for Hispanic/Latina/Latino and Asian American students, and down slightly for African American and Native American students.
2002 PROCEDURES FOR APPLICANTS OF COLOR: Sumner reported, as per the Committee's request, on his conversations with James Lincoln, Vince Cuseo and Professor Duke concerning the history of the procedures for reviewing applicants of color. The Committee decided to return to procedures similar to those used in the past, but not the last 2 years. This year, all gray area applicants of color will be reviewed by the Faculty Board on Admission, with the Assistant Dean of Admission and Coordinator of Multicultural Admission joining the Board for those reviews.
SAT/ACT REQUIREMENT FOR TRANSFER APPLICANTS:
After reviewing the requirements for all of our peer institutions
the Committee decided to maintain Grinnell's requirement that
transfer applicants submit the results of either the SAT or ACT
as part of their application for admission file. The Committee
also discussed the possibility of asking the Board to reconvene
in May and review gray area transfer applicants. This possibility
was left unresolved for the time being.
