Kerry conceded the election to the incumbent George W. Bush the morning after the election once Ohio’s electoral votes went to Bush. Iowa and New Mexico were still counting votes at the time of Kerry’s concession speach. Nearly two weeks later it was anounced that Bush had won Iowa with %50.1 compared to Kerry’s %49.2. Kerry won Powesheik county by a margin of 66 votes, compared to Bush winning by over 600 in the 2000 election against democrat canidate Al Gore. The 2004 election was considered one of the most important and polarizing elections in American history. American’s were split on issues such as the Iraq War, homeland security, the rising national debt, and eventual Supreme Court nominations. However Bush’s stance on the moral issues of gay marriage and abortion ultimatly won him the election.
