 Pergl, Will

(1) Will Pergl's exhibition "Boat, Buoy, Island" was on display from Oct. 22 through Nov.19 2004 in the Eaton-Buchan Gallery on the Coe College campus. The central sculpture "Boat" incorporates a video loop of the Iowa landscape traveling between Iowa City and Grinnell. In the piece Pergl explores the poetic relationship between the prairie and the ocean and between the human body's architecture and the equilibrium and architecture of a boat.

(2) Will Pergl was commissioned by the University of Iowa Hospital to produce the sculptural installation "Tree Mandala" for permanent display in the planned expansion of the Emergency Treatment Center, which will be complete in 2007. The plans for the Emergency Treatment Center expansion call for the cutting down a 200+ year-old oak tree. Will Pergl's utilizes the oak tree in his design for the lobby of the Emergency Treatment Center.

The "Tree Mandala's" installation will consist of (1) a twelve foot wooden tree mandala, (2) three sections of the tree trunk subtly carved and sanded smooth and (3) explanatory images that are connected to specific growth rings that outline specific events and dates such as when the tree was cut down, when the University of Iowa's Hospital was built, when The University of Iowa was founded, when the nearby railroad was built, ect.

The "Tree Mandala" is intended to provide a meditation on time and space. The time and space experienced in a hospital emergency room vs the years an old oak tree grew at the site represented by the oak trees growth rings and referenced by the "Tree Mandala". The "Tree Mandala" itself will evolve impacting hours of labor onto the lumber producing the symmetrical circular object in hopes that the final image may give a moment of pleasure during someones traumatic experience.
