Associate Professor of History

Research: I joined the Center for Prairie Studies because of my research interest in Jane Addams, a leading figure in Illinois as well as U.S history, and because of my interest in teaching students to use historical archives. Through Prairie Studies, I can involve students in archival work related to the history of Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, and Nebraska. I am particularly interested in the history of reformers during the Progressive era. An astonishing number of Progressives came off the prairie and had a tremendous effect on American life in the years between 1880 and 1920. In my years at Grinnell, I have had wonderful experiences supervising student research in the history of reform in the midwest; the Center for Prairie Studies allows me to expand these opportunities for student research.

Associate Professor History

Teaching: I have for several years taught a seminar in the History the Progressive Era and, through that, supervised research on reform endeavors in prairie states. As part of the Center for Prairie Studies, I will be developing a Tutorial on the History of the Town of Grinnell, an intermediate-level course on Iowa History, and a senior seminar on Prairie Women Reformers. The tutorial will allow first-year students to explore local history and learn about the town they will be living in for four years; each student will use local primary materials to write a research paper. The intermediate course will survey the relationships between Iowa's agricultural, environmental, political, economic, and ethnic history and will, again, offer opportunities for student research.
In the seminar on Prairie Women Reformers, students will travel to various archives in Iowa and other prairie states to research and then write about women's efforts to reform political, educational, social, and economic life in the years between 1850 and 1930.
