Books

Volumes donated to the Center and otherwise acquired include field guides, yearbooks of agriculture, conference proceedings, and books on various prairie region subjects.

Art

The Center for Prairie Studies in Harry Hopkins House is the home for the following pieces.

  • The Prairie Suite: A Study of Place: a set of 12 original prints commissioned by the Center from as many artists examining aspects of prairie and place. Available as a traveling exhibition.
  • Dakota, by Bill Innis, abstract landscape (oil pastel and oilstick on paper)
  • Tom's Circuit, by John Preston, rural Iowa landscape (oil)

  • East of Hydro No. 3, by Robert Dorlac, Oklahoma landscape (monotype) (gift of the artist)
  • Prairie History, by Catherine Macey '00, a suite of five prints depicting the transformation of the Iowa landscape from native prairie to agriculture to prairie reconstruction. (monoprint)
  • Capricious Boundaries II, by Rachel Melis '99, abstract (monoprint)
  • Iowa, by Vanessa Zboreak '04. Fabric and iron. (2004).

  • Savanna Roots, by Rachel Mellis '99 and Emily Carlson '99. Paper (The Greenleaf Line, 2005) (gift of the artist)

  • Containment and Burst, abstract (charcoal and oil pastel), by Anthony Crowley.
    These two works, by former Grinnell faculty member and professor of art, Tony Crowley, were inspired by his contact with the prairie ecosystem.
     

Ephemera

The Center for Prairie Studies has a collection of leaflets, programs, printed publications, posters, newspapers and magazines from several organizations on a variety of regional topics. These items reflect the mood and ideas concerning water issues to nature photography to changes in agriculture. A few of the sources in the collection are the Central for Rural Affairs, The Land Institute, Iowa Environmental Council, and The Nature Conservancy.

 

Videos

The Center has video recordings of several past events. These videos can be checked out at the Center for Prairie Studies office.
