October 2002
This island evolved into an impressive display of New England Aster,
Hairy Aster, Goldenrods, Smooth Blue Aster, Partridge Pea,
Black-eyed Susans, and Canada Wild Rye.

In areas that were mowed regularly through the 2002 growing season for weed control, the prairie species were present., but putting energy mostly into their root systems. Upon closer examination, there were seedlings everywhere in what looked like weedy patches with the athletic complex. The white flags in the photo to the left mark a few of the prairie plants in this 10 x 10 foot area.

Hidden among the weeds:
Stiff Golden Rod in the center and
Gray-headed Coneflower bottom left.
As an annual, partridge pea lived up
to its expectation in producing
lots of blooms and seeds in its
first growing season.
