  Component Vaccines:

Component vaccines are made from antigenic parts of pathogens. The injection of cellular components of the infectious microorganism into a person causes their immune system to respond; however, this response is much less effective than that caused by live vaccines. Because of this, component vaccines often require boosters to maintain immunity (Okonek).

Because component vaccines are not made from living organisms, they cannot cause infection.

An example of a component vaccine is the Haemophilus influenzae (HIB) vaccine.
