What are the problems with the smallpox vaccine?

Although the smallpox vaccine has some side effects, the risk of contracting the dangerous disease was too great to question vaccination when infection was still a threat. However, the significance of side effects must be re-evaluated today, with the renewed threat of smallpox infection from bioterrorism.

Common side effects include
a low grade fever and tenderness around site of inoculation.
.

The vaccine's serious side effects
include high fever, enlarged lesions around the inoculation site, swelling of body parts, and inflammation of the brain. Rates of these side effects have not been determined, but they are known to be rare. Death rate from vaccination is one in a million (Martin).
