Perfect Drugs: Reaction/Reflection Pieces

Pinpoint one controversial issue from among the topics covered in the seminar. In an essay of three to five pages (900-1500 words), address the following points:

  • Explain to a general reader what the controversy is all about. Who are the disputants? What are their arguments? What scientific schools of thought, cultural or political assumptions, or economic interests lie behind their arguments? What makes this an interesting controversy?
  • Give the reader your take on the controversy. Which side, if any, offers the most compelling arguments and why? How is the controversy likely be resolved, if at all? What new ways of looking at the controversy might be helpful in understanding it better or moving toward some resolution?
