GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Each of these three papers should focus on a different topic, one that is new to you (or takes a new perspective on previous work). Papers should be double-spaced with margins of at least 1 inch all around and a readable 10 or 12 point font. Be sure to cite sources fully using a standard reference form. To save paper, title pages are not required, and two-sided copies are acceptable. The papers should be addressed to a general audience. That is, you may assume that the reader is intelligent and well educated, but you should not assume that the reader has had any prior familiarity with the topic. Thus, you should be sure to include vivid examples or other concrete evidence to make your points. Submit two copies of your papers, one copy for each instructor.

DUE DATES: Polished drafts of all three assigned papers must be completed before fall break. You may complete the assignments in any order, and you may select your own due dates for turning papers in, with the restriction that consecutive due dates must be at least one week apart. If you have any doubts about the strength of your own writing, you should select early due dates for your papers, so that you will have ample time to meet with the instructors and get their help in revising. Final drafts of all three papers will be due as part of the course-work portfolio to be turned in one week after fall break. Initial drafts will count for1/3 of the grade on the paper, and portfolio drafts will count for 2/3 of the grade
