In advance of class, read your textbook, study the grammar and vocabulary, and practise exercises. “Lea” (“Read”) is shorthand for this kind of preparation. In your preparation, you should start to feel acquainted with the topics; speak aloud, formulate in writing and orally your own responses to practise questions in the book. Some exercises have one correct response: check the back of your textbook to correct your preparation. Other exercises involve an open response from you: practise giving your own responses, write them down.
In class, I will discuss and explain the reading briefly and answer your questions about grammar and other topics. We will spend most of the class time on various oral exercises and activities. So, come to class ready to practise what you have prepared! Expect to speak frequently in class.
At the beginning of a lesson unit, you have more reading homework so that towards the end of a lesson unit you can review and study while we take on more activities and develop what you have learned. In the final days of a unit, I may assign homework according to the activities and your progress or need to review, so attend all classes to keep abreast. Usually towards the end of a lesson unit, we will view a video, conduct a reading, develop a dramatic scene, and review.
Prepare your workbook and laboratory exercises over the course of a lesson unit. Respond to the questions; then use the answer keys and a contrasting pen or pencil to correct your work. I will correct the sections that don’t have an answer key. You will always do the lab and workbook exercises for the chapter focused on in a given lesson: e.g., Lesson 1 (lección 1) focuses on Chapter 8. In addition, sometimes you have to do selected exercises from other chapters for a given lesson. I have indicated the cuaderno and lab work to be done for these selections.
Use
your workbook and lab exercises as a means of daily preparation or review.
Try to do your lab in two or three sittings. Don’t save everything
to do for the end of a lesson unit, just before an exam. You are graded
on the quality of your lab and workbook exercises: A for well done with
few errors and properly corrected; B for complete work, more errors,
fairly well corrected; C for incomplete or poorly done work and corrections;
D for very poor work, poor or no corrections; F for no work handed in
by the deadline. Always do your work; always correct it. Do
not worry about making some mistakes, but diligently and promptly take
note of the correct answers when you correct them.
