1) Each student will keep a notebook devoted exclusively
to this course, and will make three different kinds of regular
entries in it. First, you will take notes on readings and class
discussions, taking care to summarize (in your own words or in
outline form) the key points that you have gleaned from the assignment
or discussion. Second, for each case study (see below), you will
write a one paragraph summary of what you have learned about that
case and how it informs your understanding of the course as a
whole. I will review these notebooks with you individually, on
a rotating schedule, 3-4 times over the course of the semester.

2) Each student will be responsible
for preparing carefully for each class session, and for participating
actively in the work of the class. Some of our work will be done
as a large group, some in smaller groups. The success of the course
depends on everyone contributing to the best of their ability
in all phases of our work. (25% of final grade)
3) There will be regular "discovery"
assignments, as mentioned above. They must be carried out in a
timely fashion; no deadline extensions will be given. In those
cases where the assignment calls for group work, the entire group
will be held responsible for successful collaboration. (25% of
final grade)
4) The final projects will
be discussed in class. (25% of final grade)
