The classical Hindu and Buddhist art of Nepal is rooted in
the principles of the mandala, a geometrical harmony and precision that embodies
the perfection of the divine. We can view images of
Hindu
gods and goddesses,
sculpture,
mandalas,
and
other paintings. In so doing, we are advised
to remember that for the artisans who created these images and the devotees
who have revered them they are not just works of art. They are windows into
a divine reality. For them, gazing at these images is a spiritual act, called
darsana, with potentially profound implications.
