COURSE DESCRIPTION

Music 261 focuses on Western European music from the late Renaissance through the Classic era. The course is generally chronological, but organized around topic areas related to various aspects of music-making and the cultural contexts in which it took place. Topics concentrate on the contributions of composer, patron, or performer or the intersection of all three. Questions regarding social class and gender are considered as they affect music and its production.
