COURSE DESCRIPTION

This tutorial will study depictions of the prairies in the work of writers, painters, composers, and filmmakers. Through the arts, we will seek to understand the cultural significance and natural history of the prairie from the first contact between Native Americans and pioneer settlers to contemporary interest in sustainable agriculture and prairie restoration. As background for the study of artistic renderings of the prairies, we will visit prairies and learn about basic prairie ecology. Preliminary reading/viewing/listening list:

OVERALL GOAL

To develop critical reading, writing, and discussion skills through a study of art works relating to the prairies.
