1st-year tutorial, Fall, 2002

 CLASS REQUIREMENTS AND GRADE

Papers 2/3
Discussion, oral performance, preparation, participation 1/3

CLASS POLICIES

Students will complete all reading and writing assignments by the beginning of the class indicated, except under the following circumstances:
1. the student has a medical or personal emergency, confirmed by a note from the campus Health Services or Academic Advising office;
2. the student gains the instructor's approval for a 2-day extension on a paper assignment by securing approval of a typed progress report by class-time on the day the paper is due. The report should include the student's name, the title of the paper, a summary of work already completed, and an explanation of why the extension is needed.

If you have specific physical, psychiatric or learning disabilities and require accommodations, please let me know early in the semester so that your learning needs may be appropriately met. You will need to provide documentation of your disability to the Associate Dean and Director of Academic Advising, Joyce Stern, located in the lower level of the Forum (x3702).

Type and double-space all of your essays, using a standard font (for example, Times, Arial, Helvetica, or Courier) and type size (10 or 12 point.) Include parenthetical citations and a works cited page listing all ideas and quotations gleaned from other sources, whether print, electronic, or aural. Use the MLA format for documentation found in chapter 53 of Toby Fulwiler and Alan Hayakawa's The College Writer's Reference (3rd ed. Upper Saddle River: Prentice, 2002).

Since tutorial seeks to improve critical reading and discussion skills, in addition to writing, I will base a significant portion of your grade (1/3) on how well you prepare, how regularly and punctually you attend, and how well you improve in ability to contribute to, lead, and learn from discussion. We will review your writing, participation, oral performance, and preparation during individual appointments several times over the semester.
