Introduction

This letter responded to the letter from Iowa’s League of Women Voters President on November 18, 1947 to Iowa Governor Robert D. Blue (Doc. 10) regarding the bill that proposed the formation of a national Commission on the Legal Status of Women in the United States (Doc. 8). Governor Blue’s response to President DeGowin indicates that the Governor believed there were no legal discriminations against women in Iowa as of 1947. Despite that belief, the Governor still showed his support for the formation of a national commission to study discrimination against women.

Dear Mrs. DeGowin:

I have your letter of November 18 with reference to Senate Joint Resolution 67.

I am happy that Iowa is among the first in rank in the States in recognizing the rights of women. I am informed that there are many states where there is unfair discrimination against women. I believe that a committee, to study this problem and to present to the people all of the facts in connection with this, together with the actual discrimination which exists in some states, would be a most helpful study.
