Revolution breaks out Feb 22-24, 1848; Second Republic forms

Riot in Cologne, March 3;

Insurrection in Berlin, March 18; Camphausen-Hansemann ministry

Revolution on March 13-15 in Vienna;

March 15 in Budapest & March 18-22 in Milan

 
April 23: national elections return a parliament more conservative than the Provisional Government May: Prussian constitutional convention meets, as radical democrats debate with liberals May: Emperor flees Vienna May: National Assembly convenes in the Paulskirche
"June Days" --workers' uprising to protest dissolution of National Workshops   June: General Windischgrätz dissolves "Slav Congress" in Prague  

July: General Radetzky defeats Kingdom of Piedmont

 

October: Citizens' militia fires on demonstrating workers in Berlin October: Imperial troops conquer Vienna in fighting that kills over 4,000

September: armistice with Denmark dismays German nationalists

 

November: royal garrison reoccupies Berlin with little fighting November: Austria announces that its empire will remain unified no matter what is decided in Frankfurt  
December 1848: Louis Napoleon wins 75% of national vote in presidential election December 1848: Frederick William IV adopts written constitution March 1849: Austria adopts written constitution with powerful monarchy; Hungary conquered Jan-Aug 1849 with Russian assistance. March 1849: federal constitution promulgated; 29 small states ratify it, but not Prussia, Austria, or Bavaria
  In May 1849 the radical rump of Frankfurt Assembly appeals to the German people to implement its federal constitution through popular uprisings. By August Prussian and Austrian troops crush all revolutionary movements, and tens of thousands of revolutionaries flee Germany
December 1851: Louis Napoleon seizes power, creates Second Empire
