Goals of Course:

  1. To conduct a thorough review of German grammar, and to master more advanced aspects of German grammar.
  2. To enlarge your vocabulary and improve your reading skills by working with short stories, sketches, poems, and a major 20th century drama.
  3. To improve your mastery of spoken German through lively discussion of our selected readings, and through small group assignments and oral presentations.
  4. To improve your writing skills through periodic short papers (1-3 pages).
  5. To introduce you to some aspects of German intellectual life after World War II.

Texts (all available at bookstore):

Der Besuch der alten Dame. Friedrich Dürrenmatt.
Handbuch zur detuschen Grammatik.
Handbuch zur detuschen Grammatik workbook.
Recommended:  A German/English dictionary. See me for suggestions. You generally get what you pay for in terms of quality.

Requirements:

  1. Thorough preparation: Come to class prepared to discuss the assigned readings and grammar lessons.
  2. Papers: Several short papers will be due in the course of the semester based on prior readings. NO LATE PAPERS, NO EXCEPTIONS.
  3. Workbooks: The workbooks are due at each quiz on the chapters corresponding to the schedule below.
  4. Oral presentations: Each week, a different pair of students will lead our discussion in German of the assigned readings. Please meet with me before your turn to lead so that we can discuss strategies for classroom discussion.
  5. Quizzes: These will take place after we complete every two or three chapters of the textbook. NO MAKE-UPS.
  6. Final Exam: The final will be a cumulative exam based on the textbook, although the emphasis will be on the final chapters. It will also include some basic short essay components.
Typischer Wochenplan:

Montags: Quizze über die Grammatik. Einführungen in die Texte der Woche.
Dienstags: Grammatikerklärung. Übungen. Texte besprochen. Ein paar Studenten sind für die Diskussion verantwortlich.
Mittwochs: Grammatikübungen Fortsetzung der Textbesprechung.
Freitags: Grammatikübungen Fortsetzung der Textbesprechung.
