Why is the Map Tips Check Box Grayed Out?

• A datasource layer must have a spatial index in order to make use of Map Tips. Otherwise the map Tips check box will be grayed out.
• To create a spatial index:
• In ArcCatalog -
• Click the shapefile for which you want to create a spatial index.
• Click the File menu and click Properties.
• Click the Index tab.
• Click Add.
• Click OK.
