Fixing Corrupt Shapefiles

REASON - When operations start behaving erratically while using shapefiles, the cause could be the corruption of shapes within the shapefile itself. Until ESRI tracks down the cause of corrupted shapefiles, a simple quick fix has been created.

  1. Locate program “cleanshapefile.exe”.

    1. If “cleanshapefile.exe” is present on your system.

      1. navigate using a file explorer (i.e., Windows Explorer) to a sub-directory of the ArcGIS installation folder -

      2. ...arcgis\arcexe81\ArcObjects Developer Kit\samples\utilities\cleanshapefile\.

    2. If “cleanshapefile.exe” is not present on your system it is probably located in a similar sub-directory in the Grinnell College storageserver.

      1. \\Storage\ARCGIS\ArcObjects Developer Kit\samples\utilities\cleanshapefile\.

    3. If “cleanshapefile.exe” is not present at Grinnell download the utility from http://arconline.esri.com/arcobjectsonline/.

      1. Enter "clean" in the search box.

      2. Open the topic "Export and clean shapefile".

      3. Click “Download Now”.

      4. Place in a new folder on your computer.

  2. Run the file “cleanshapefile.exe”.

    1. It will prompt you for an input shapefile.

    2. It will then prompt you for an output shapefile name

  3. The program will chug a few seconds and provide a brief report on changes made to the shapefile.
