Schedule and Require= ments for the Poster Sessions and the Final Reports.

Schedule:

July 31 (9-noon) Poster Presentations= .

The posters will be on display on Thursday, Ju= ly 31. The session will be run i= n the format of a poster session at a chemistry conference. Each presenter will need to post h= er or his poster by 9 am= . Two sessions beginning at 9 am and 10:30 am wil= l allow discussion of the presented posters. Group I will present from 9:00am to 10:30am, grou= p II from 10:30am to 12:00.

Posters are limited to 3’ x 4’. You should speak with your research advisor about guidelines for preparing your poster; examples of posters prepared by students in the program are on display throughout the departmen= t. The most recent copy of the ACS sty= le guide has a section on poster presentations that is very useful. Several facult= y have a copy of this guide that they would let you look at. Templates for poster presentations= are available on the projects server (\\storage\projects\chm)=

All posters have to be up by 9 AM. The presentations will be followe= d by a lunch together at “Casa Margarita”. We will leave for lunch at 12:15 pm from the Poster s= ession.

Summer Research Program ends, final reports are due.

Requirements for Reports:

a. Poster Presentation.

Posters are limited to 3’ x 4’. Colored backgrounds are costly to = print, and therefore use of them should contribute to the content of the poster. You should speak with your research advisor about guidelines for preparing your poster; examples of posters prepared by students in the program are on display throughout the departmen= t. The most recent copy of the ACS sty= le guide has a section on poster presentations that is very useful. Several facult= y have a copy of this guide that they would let you look at. Templates for poster presentations= are available on the projects server (\\storage\projects\chm). To get your poster printed in the library, you need to submit your poster electronically to Stephanie Peterson (petersos@grinnell.edu) by 9 am, Tuesday July 29.

Components of a Poster—not necessarily separate sections but all are part of a successful poster=

a) &n= bsp; Title and Authors - Across the top of the poster identify the subject of yo= ur poster and list all the contributors to the work. At a minimum, you and your faculty advisor are the authors; there may be additional co-authors.

b) &n= bsp; Introduction - Goals of the project and background.

c) &n= bsp; Experimental Methods - A very brief summary of the experiments conducted.

d) &n= bsp; Results - Most of the space on the poster will be used to display the table= s, graphs, etc. which report the results.&nbs= p; Like in formal papers, tables and graphs should have titles, axis la= bels, and legends so the viewer can readily understand the results presented. Use figure captions if apparatus drawings or other visual information is being posted.

e) &n= bsp; Conclusions - Include identification of the origins of particular component= s of the water sample or patterns of ion distribution considering the sources of= the drinking water samples (especially for the 4 benchmark samples).=

f) &n= bsp; Literature references

g) &n= bsp; Acknowledgments –

Typically, posters don't have a lot of text. Any text used should be printed in= a large, easily readable font (14-18 point) so that it is readable by a person standing two feet away from the poster.&nb= sp; Text is used mostly in the introduction and conclusion sections of t= he poster, since the author(s) of the poster will be present to verbally discu= ss their results with the viewer which replaces text associated with the resul= ts of the project.

b. Written Report.

This should be prepared in the style of a manuscript for submission to one of the major ACS journals. Typically it should consist of the following: Title page (title, name and date), an Abstract (located first, b= ut written last), Introduction, Experimental Section, Results, Discussion, and References Cited (properly cited). Copies of the ACS Style Guide are available in most faculty offices. The written report is due at the end of the ten-week period; i.e= ., on August 1 at 5 pm.

As you plan your poster presentation, you shou= ld be developing major sections of your final report. Illustrations, tables of data, etc= . from your poster can probably be incorporated directly into the paper. During the next couple weeks, as y= ou finish a block of experiments, you should consider writing up that portion = of the work, so that everything does not have to be written up in the last cou= ple days.

Other Matters:

Paper materials:

Turn in your report—along with your lab notebook, collections of computer output, spectra, references, etc. –= and poster to your mentor directly.

Lab Benches/equipment:

Leave general purpose glassware in your lab ar= ea –clean and stacked to drain dry—on the lab bench near the sink. Check with your mentor = on the disposition of chemicals and equipment used specifically for the project. Make sure group owned glassware and chemicals are returned to your mentor’s laboratory. Clear the desk and bench top of all other debris.

Chemical Waste=

&nbs= p; Make sure all waste material is properly labeled and left in the proper place (a= sk advisor if unclear) and all reagents and products are = labled.

Keys:

Turn in your keys to your mentor on Friday, Au= gust 3. Place your keys in one of the small envelopes provided by your mentor, sign the envelope and then give t= he envelope to your mentor.
