History 329.01
Spring 2002
On a single page, write a description of your proposed research topic that explains why it is an interesting topic. Due February 22.
I am not interested in the personal reasons you might have for choosing this topic. I am interested in the intellectual reasons you have chosen it. What about the topic is interesting and deserves intellectual analysis? What questions does the topic raise? What hypothesis could you offer today to answer these questions?
As you set about establishing your topic, keep in mind that you need a topic that will allow you to make use of available primary sources. So you may want to start with some interesting primary sources and work from there. When you start to think about research questions, look to The Craft of Research,pp. 1-84. I particularly recommend pp. 35-63.
Write one or two paragraphs that describe the interesting intellectual questions associated with your topic and your current hypothesis relating to this question.
Remember to include your name on the sheet you hand in. The paper should be double-spaced with one-inch margins on all sides.
