Overview=

            =     This course is the second semester of a two semester introduction to college lev= el chemistry. Part of the course= will discuss typical general chemistry material but the largest portions of the course will introduce the fields of analytical and inorganic chemistry. The course will begin with a discu= ssion of mono- and polyprotic acid-base equilibria, especially as these substances are used in titration analyses. Titrations are classical, wet analytical methods which still find wi= de use because of their low expense, high precision, and application to a rang= e of sample types. The course will= then introduce the more current analytical approaches of molecular and atomic spectrophotometry that find broad application in modern biological and envi= ronmental laboratories. Both of these techniques are well suited to deepening the understanding of inorganic transition metal chemistry, the topic pursued in the middle of the semester. The course will then examine a 'real world problem’ - that of measuring and understanding = the inorganic composition of drinking water to answer the question: 'What's in your water besides H2O?'   Few substances are more impo= rtant to our health than the water we consume each day and the topics discussed h= ere can provide assurance to consumers that their water is indeed safe to drink. The course concludes with the topics of chromatography and nuclear chemistr= y.

            =     The rationale for the strong emphasis on quantitative analytical chemistry is t= hat chemistry is fundamentally a quantitative science. From the time of Lavoisier, accura= te analyses have been central to the development of chemistry as a science. In recent years the critical role = of analysis has been made abundantly clear.&n= bsp; Whether you are interested in low level pollutants in surface waters= or air, or are characterizing physiologically active compounds, the role of careful and accurate analysis is critical.= Whether you are oriented toward a professional career in chemistry o= r a related discipline, including medicine, or simply want a sound background in chemistry, the methods and points of view of analytical chemistry are of central importance.

            =     The emphasis in the laboratory will be on careful technique and effective use of instrumentation. Careful technique is essential for significant and reliable work in any experimental science, but it is particularly important in analytical chemistry. However= , we are not simply training technicians, and we expect you to develop a sound g= rasp of the underlying principles along with specific laboratory skills.   The experimental approach developed will be applicable to problems you may want to solve in any field= .

Text Assignments

            =     For the first two-thirds of the semester parallel assignments will be made from your two principal texts, Harris, E= xploring Chemical Analysis, (H), and Zumdahl (Z), which has been the principal t= ext for Chemistry 129 during the last two years. Z provides an elementary introduct= ion to general principles and applications for each topic, and you will be respons= ible for all the material in the assigned chapter. Harris treats the principles and calculations in more depth and also emphasizes analytical applications. This class will build on explicit knowledge from Chemistry 129 of Intermolecular Forces, Chemical Bonding, Solution Stoichiometry, Structures of Common Polyatomic Ions (especially na= mes and charges), and Monoprotic Acid/Base Equilibria. You are encouraged to review those topics on your own. The Chemistry 1= 30 Laboratory Manual provides both general background information and expl= icit details regarding the specific analytical determinations which are the focu= s of the laboratory assignments. T= he Water Module guidebook will be the course guide for the middle five weeks of the semester. Before you begi= n work on your first assignment, spend a few minutes looking over your texts. Note particularly the general organization and the contents of the Appendices, including answer keys for = some of the problems and essential tables of data such as pK_as.<= /o:p>

Class Attendance

            =     Class attendance and participation is expected and part of your grade depends upon this. You are expected to come prepared to class by having read the assignments for each particular class period in advance. ALERT: Learning will occur in class.

Laboratory

  =             &nb= sp; Each of the lab sections meets once each week.&= nbsp; Students are assigned drawers and equipment the first lab period. The lab schedule is given with the course schedule, but specific details are summarized in the Laboratory Manual. The laboratory work in Chemistry 1= 30 is closely tied to the class work. Consequently, part of several class periods will be devoted to discussion of the specific experiment to be performed during that week or t= he following week. It is assumed= that you will come to lab prepared. Thus you should read the assignment, thi= nk about it, decide in advance how you will do the experiment, and write up as much of the lab as you can in your notebook (introduction, references, procedure, and data tables).

  =             &nb= sp; You are expected to attend lab each week during your scheduled time. If you must miss a lab, consult yo= ur lab instructor to schedule a makeup. You are not free to use the lab space anytime you please because of safety considerations and interference with others regularly scheduled to use the = same facilities.

Grades

  =             &nb= sp; The final grade in the course will be computed on the following basis:

Examinations

  =             &nb= sp; Three examinations will be given during the semester, and a comprehensive final e= xam will end the semester. No provisions for makeup of examinations will be made, except for extraordinary circumstances. The approximat= e exam dates are given on the schedule. You can expect exams will be given within one or at most two lecture periods of the projected date. If you require accommodations approved by the Student Affairs Office, please m= ake these arrangements at the beginning of the semester.

  =             &nb= sp; Each exam will cover specified chapters from your text. In some cases, specific sections o= f a chapter may not be covered in the course.&= nbsp; When this occurs, the specific sections will be identified in class. The exams will consist= of problems, definitions, and discussions of concepts.

Quizzes

  =             &nb= sp; There will be short (10-15 minute) quizzes given frequently during the semester.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Quiz dates will be announced at le= ast one class period in advance. = One quiz score will be dropped from your course grade.

Problem Sets

  =             &nb= sp; Problem sets will be assigned, approximately once per week. Problem solving is the most import= ant general skill developed in CHM 130 so success in the class is closely tied = to understanding the assigned problems. = Problem sets will not be collected and complete solutions for all problems will be available on the bulletin board outside your instructor's office at the end of the week they are assigned. Please consult them frequently. Expect to see homework problems on quizzes and exams.

General Comments on Problem Sets, Exams, and Quizzes

  =             &nb= sp; First, always show your reasoning. S= imply stating the answer is not sufficient. For discussion type problems, tell why your answer is correct. For quantitative problems, show yo= ur math in reasonable detail. A correct answer that does not show the logic leading to it will not receive credit. These principles appl= y to examinations, quizzes, and problem sets.&n= bsp; Shortly after quizzes and exams are returned, an answer key will be posted near your instructor's office or placed on Pioneer Web. Exams and quizzes must reflect you= r own work. For problem sets, feel = free to work with other students in the class or consult anyone willing to help = for assistance, particularly the mentor assigned to your section and/or a tutor= .

Help-Office Hours, Mentor, Tutor=

Calculators

  =             &nb= sp; A hand held calculator is essential for this calculation-intensive course. Availability of a calculator is as= sumed for all class sessions and labs. You should make sure that your calculator is fully charged and operational before coming to class; otherwise you may find yourself doing a= lot of longhand math. Your calcul= ator should have the four basic functions (+, -, x, /) plus log, ln, e^{x,
and 10^x keys. One =

memory storage keys are also helpful.
You should not use your calculator as a crutch. When you work quantitative problem=

first set up the problem using symbols and units, substitute in the numeric=
