Grinnell College Biotechnology
Tutorial Fall 2008
Biotechnology: Bountiful Harvest or Bitter Harvest?
Biotechnology: The term biotechnology includes many activities most of which
involve harnessing the abilities of living organisms. This tutorial will focus
on how these abilities can be harnessed through the use of genetic engineering
techniques and it will look at their biotechnological applications in a variety
of areas including genetic engineering of plants and animals, genetic testing,
gene therapies, reproductive technologies, human cloning, DNA fingerprinting
and patenting. As we examine each of these areas we will consider the social
implications of these new technologies, the promises made and the risks involved
in using each, as well as the ethical, legal and economic questions that
they raise.
