For Students
The Center for the Humanities is committed to enriching the academic experiences of Grinnell College students through a variety of opportunities:
- The Center offers a Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship in the Humanities to a graduating senior who spends the year after graduation at the Center on a research project related the coming year’s announced theme. This fellowship includes a stipend, office space, full library access, and an opportunity to conduct advanced research by participating in the Center’s programming and working closely with the Center’s visiting scholar. This year, we are pleased to have Grant Custer (English ’08) at the Center. Grant’s research this year will explore the nexus of the visual arts and the world of advertising, and he will present his research this spring at the annual symposium. The Center will post information about next-year’s post-baccalaureate fellowship during the Spring semester. Applications are due in April, and the decision is announced by the end of April. Last year’s application information is available here.
Each year the Center offers one or two sections of Humanities 395, a variable content student seminar taught by a visiting scholar in a prominent or emerging field within current humanities research.
The Center supports classroom visits by scholars from off-campus. If you professor has mentioned a potential speaker, or you have one in mind, please consult with your professor, who may request support from the Forms and Flyers page.
For more information about opportunities for students, please contact the Director of the Center, Dan Reynolds.
