POST-BACCALAUREATE FELLOWSHIP
IN THE HUMANITIES

2008-2009

The Center for the Humanities offers an opportunity for continued independent study, in preparation for graduate work, by a student in the academic year immediately following graduation. This fellowship provides office space and some financial support for a year of personal research in conjunction with the arrival of a Visiting Scholar in the Humanities; in return, the successful applicant will commit to meaningful engagement with the activities of the Center.

Benefits:
A stipend of $6,800.00 is awarded with additional funds of $300.00 provided to offset the cost of supplies, and working space will also be provided as available. The Fellow will have full library privileges.

Obligations and Duties:
The Fellow is expected to engage in his/her own research on a project related to the Center’s theme of “Visual Culture.”

The Fellow will courses taught by the Center’s Visiting Scholar in the Humanities (one per semester). The Fellow will also participate in meetings and other activities of the Center. In addition, the Fellow will be expected to provide five hours per week of research assistance for the Visiting Scholar and the Center’s Director. The Fellow will make a public presentation of his/her research at Center’s annual Spring Symposium.

 Application Procedure:
To apply for the Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship in the Humanities, interested senior students should present a letter of application to the Center Director that addresses the following questions:

In addition to the application letter, the applicant must present a sample of written work, a transcript, and one confidential letter of recommendation from a member of the Grinnell faculty for review.

Deadline for Applications:
Applications must be turned in by Friday, April 18, 2008 at 5 PM to Sondi Burnell, Goodnow 107.
