Acknowledgements
In the process of producing Walking a Tightrope, we have received advice
from professors, staff, fellow students, and family who have stressed
what a unique and privileged position it is to be undergraduate curators
of an exhibition. We are grateful to Grinnell College for this
opportunity and to the numerous people who have shown their enthusiastic
commitment to this project.
We thank John L. and Roslyn Bakst Goldman for selecting Grinnell
as the home for their extensive collection of German Expressionist
prints. Their hard work and love for this medium over many years
produced one of last few private collections of this sort today. We
appreciate the incredible generosity of an anonymous donor who helped
the College secure this collection for generations of students to come.
We are grateful to Daniel Strong, Associate Director and Curator of
Exhibitions in the Faulconer Gallery, who facilitated the acquisition of
this fine collection. Unending thanks go to Assistant Professor Jenny
Anger, who has lent us her knowledge of this period while still allowing
us room for creativity and experimentation. Her steady support both
academically and personally have made this an invaluable experience for
all of us.
The support for this exhibition also came from the Faulconer
Gallery staff, who not only helped with administration but also helped
students gain experience in a variety of areas. Director Lesley Wright
shared her expertise and insight as a curator. Working with three
students, Matthew Johnson, Ashley Jones, and Margaret MacDonald, Milton
Severe, Exhibition Designer, offered advice on effective gallery design.
Jim Powers, Associate Director of the Office of Communication and
Events, transformed the visions of Kevin Cannon, Sarah Labowitz, and
Jenni Wu for the exhibition catalogue and Carrie Robbins for publicity
into a unified and bold design. As Curator of Education, Karla J. Niehus
not only aided Alice Anderson in planning educational events but also
worked with Alicia Reid and Mordecai Scheckter to plan special events.
David Berk, Instructional Multimedia Technology Specialist, worked with
Kevin Cannon to create the exhibition website. Kay Wilson Jenkins,
Curator of the Collection in the Print and Drawing Study Room, helped us
understand different techniques in printmaking. Karen Hueftle, Slide
Curator, and Carla R. González, Photographer, enhanced our research by
making the images available in slides and online. Assistant Professor
Melissa Schulenberg demonstrated the processes of different printmaking
techniques. We extend our thanks to Jay Clarke, Associate Curator of
Prints and Drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago, for visiting
Grinnell and giving us scholarly and curatorial advice; our
conversations with her enriched our vision for this exhibition. Thanks
are also due, finally, to Eugene Gaub, Jeff Cooper, and Timothy Benson.
In closing we sincerely hope the quality of the exhibition and its
accompanying catalogue and events demonstrate our gratitude to this
amazing group of people.
