FAULCONER GALLERY
Description:
The Faulconer Gallery is an independent administrative department
at Grinnell College. Located at the heart of the Bucksbaum Center
for the Arts, the Gallery is part of the fine arts complex designed
by internationally famous architect Cesar Pelli in 1999. With
7,400 square feet of exhibition space, the gallery presents major
changing exhibitions of significant historical and contemporary
art on a rotating basis. Our mission is to serve the students
and faculty of Grinnell College, as well as the members of our
community in Iowa and the upper midwest. The staff often collaborates
with faculty across campus in planning exhibitions and programming
(lectures, visiting artists, special events).
Every year in May we present the Annual Student Art Salon, a juried
exhibition open to all students who wish to submit work. We also
present the biennial Art Faculty exhibitions, which alternate
with solo shows for members of the studio faculty. The Gallery
staff also works with the exhibition seminar taught by the Art
Department. Students in the seminar use art in the Grinnell College
Art Collection to design an exhibition, presented in the Faulconer
Gallery, and to write a scholarly catalogue, which the Gallery
publishes.
The Faulconer Gallery also oversees the Print & Drawing Study
Room located in the basement of Burling Library on campus. The
heart of our art holdings is a fine collection of European and
American prints and drawings, ranging through many periods and
styles. The collection features works of social protest, and continues
to grow through gifts and acquisitions. The Gallery also has a
small collection of paintings and sculpture, which are used to
support the teaching mission of the College. Exhibitions curated
from the permanent collection are often on view in the Print &
Drawing Study Room. From time to time, we use the Print and Drawing
Study Room for exhibitions curated by advanced art students, and
we present exhibitions of work by those students selected by the
Art Department for a special 9th Semester fellowship in studio
art.
