India Studies (ACM)
The ACM India Studies program is located in Pune, a city of over
a million people, in Maharastra State, an ideal place to observe
the interaction of tradition and modernity that characterizes India
today. Students are introduced to the civilization of India through
area-studies courses on such topics as the colonial legacy, religion,
caste, village life, urbanization, and politics. Coursework is supplemented
by specialist guest lectures, films, music and dance performances.
Substantial planning is done for a major independent study project
in the humanities, social studies, or natural sciences to be undertaken
in India. Intensive instruction is provided in Marathi, the major
language of Maharastra. In Pune, students enroll at the Tilak Maharastra
Vidyapeeth, a local university, offering courses in Marathi language,
literature, history, philosophy, economics, political science, art
and music. Many extracurricular activities and field trips are available.
Students complete independent-study projects under the supervision
of Indian academic advisers. Students live with an Indian family
throughout the semester. Eligibility: Relevant course work such
as Major Asian Religions strongly recommended.
