MEXICO:
Baja - Center for Wetland Studies
The School for Field Studies program in Mexico focuses on Magdalena
Bay, an important coastal habitat severely threatened by overfishing
and the pressures of development. The program is concerned with
collecting biological and socio-economic data necessary for the
creation of a sustainable development management plan for the region
and on increasing the capacity of local residents to sustainably
manage their resources. Located on the outskirts of Puerto San Carlos,
a fishing village of 4,000, the SFS Center occupies a two-acre facility
complete with classrooms, laboratory, library, dining, study, and
living areas. Starting with an orientation featuring intensive Spanish
instruction and lectures on the history, socio-economics, culture,
and resource use patterns of Mexico, the program then concentrates
on three inter-disciplinary case studies focusing on local environmental
problems and resource conflicts. Students are registered in four
courses: Coastal Ecology; Principles of Resource Management; Economic
and Ethical Issues in Sustainable Development; and Directed Research.
Days are spent in a combination of lectures, field exercises, and
research on work sites including beach areas, mangroves, waters,
and local communities. Faculty led lectures are supplemented by
guest lectures from local experts, resource managers, and community
leaders. Every student will complete and present a directed research
project based on research techniques, statistical methods, and scientific
writing skills taught on the program. A significant amount of time
is spent working with the local community in volunteer activities
in environmental education and conservation. Housing is provided
in four-person cabins. Eligibility: Minimum of one semester of college-level
Spanish. At least one course in environmental studies or biology
recommended. Commitment to understanding environmental issues. Willingness
to live and work in groups.
