Washington,
D.C.: Grinnell-in-Washington (fall)
The Grinnell-in-Washington DC program (GIW) is the college's domestic
branch campus located in the nation's capital. The academic program
offers three courses and an internship that may be used for major
or cognate credit towards majors in a number of departments. The
variety of internships available is almost limitless, from politics
to environmental law to women's rights. Students participate in
internships for 10 weeks, from Monday-Thursday 8am-5pm. The courses
for GIW consist of a policy making course, a course on internships,
and a third course taught by a Grinnell faculty member. This third
course changes every fall, depending on the interests of the faculty
member. This program allows students to get to know Washington DC
in depth through their classes and gain real-life work-experience
through an intensive internship. Classes utilize the resources of
the area to enrich and support the program. Extra-curricular activities,
including concerts and dinners, are funded by the program. Many
costs associated with field trips are covered. Housing is provided
in fully furnished shared apartments located in Alexandria, Virginia
(about 40 minutes commute from central DC.) Eligibility: At least
second-year student status. Minimum GPA of 2.75.
